Does writing/typing information help you to learn it effectively?

In school, it was customary for us to write or type information to help us learn it. However, I wonder about the validity of this umption. Are there any studies which validate/invalidate the proposition that writing/typing information helps one to learn it better than simply reading the information, or speaking it, for that matter?
