I'm looking for a good, clean alternative to burning wood in my fireplace. anyone have some good suggestions?

i have found some decent products online, but they are based on the east coast and shipping it to california is pretty expensive. and i am wondering if any of these alternatives are worth the price. i am hoping that there is a product closer to my home that i can pickup myself, if possible, but will pay for the shipping if i have to. anybody know of some good products being produced anywhere that burn very clean and give off a good amount of heat?
